Indianapolis
Indianapolis, Indiana, known for its "Hoosier Hospitality", will
host the third triennial Assemblies of God World Congress and 2000
Celebration, August 7-10, 2000 in the RCA Dome.
This is not the first time the city has played host to Assemblies
of God delegates. The 75th Anniversary of the Assemblies of God
was held there in 1989 and again for the General Council meeting
in 1997.
The nation's 12th largest city, Indianapolis welcomes more than
five million visitors to the city each year. Designated the Crossroads
of America, more interstate highways run through the city than any
other and is within a day's drive of half the nation's population.
A city of nearly one million, visitors are usually surprised with
its stunning skyline, world-class attractions and vibrant downtown.
It's a mixture of cosmopolitan flair and cordial hospitality. Convenient
access by air and 12-minute cab rides from the airport to downtown
make this metropolis easy and affordable to navigate, and more than
100 restaurants are within five blocks of the Indiana Convention
Center & RCA Dome.
Indianapolis is probably best known for its sports including professional
football, basketball and many amateur sports including the home
of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). However,
it is probably best known for hosting the largest single-day sporting
event in the world, The Indy "500." The city also is also home to
the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, a five-story interactive
playhouse, the largest of its kind in the world.
So what exactly is a "Hoosier"? That's the question most asked
by Indiana visitors. No one seems to know exactly where the word
"Hoosier" (hoo-zhur) came from but there are at least 30 stories
on its origin. Today the word is used to denote an Indiana native
or resident. Although the origin is uncertain, one thing is clear
about the word "Hoosier" and Hospitality go hand in hand.
