History
of the Assemblies of God in Austria
During the 1920Ős Swedish missionaries
from the Filadelfia Church in Stockholm started to evangelize the
Vienna area. Two Pentecostal churches were founded and then formed
one church during the thirties with around 200 members. In 1936
all religious groups that were not supported by the government had
to be closed and believers started to meet in smaller groups in
private houses. After World War II they were allowed to meet again
and began an intensive evangelistic work with only 30 believers.
The small groups that began to
form after the war were looking for orientation and support. In
1946, 26 preachers met together at Sattledt and founded the Free
Christian Fellowship in Austria. Many German brothers came to help
this new fellowship get started. During the 1960Ős, young Austrians
started to go to the Bible school in Erzhausen, Germany and came
back to work in their own country. Over the next few decades, the
movement grew together with many nation wide ministries such as
youth camps, a Bible school and an ICI program for all the churches.
