History
of the Assemblies of God in Finland
Pentecost impacted Finland as a Norwegian
pastor held meetings in Helsinki in 1912. The Christians from the
Methodist, Laestadians and Finnish Missionary Society were the first
to accept this new movement. These people displayed spiritual hunger,
powerful prayer and signs that followed. This became a group of
people with great leadership and biblical credentials.
Out of this movement of independent
Pentecostal churches has come a powerful missionary church. Four
hundred and fifty Finnish missionaries serve in 42 countries. The
churches sponsor a literature ministry, radio and television and
have a Bible school offering missionary training through an MA degree.
Finland has a serious alcohol problem
with all the social tragedies this implies. Secularization and non-Christian
religiosity are on the increase. Regular Sunday attendance in the
state church is only 4%.
