History of the Assemblies of God in France At the height of the Reformation, 48% or the population was Protestant. Because of persecution in the 17th and 18th centuries, this number was reduced to the present 2%. The nation is traditionally Catholic but the majority of the people have deserted the Church and ordination to the priesthood is at an all time low. Catholics and Evangelicals alike consider France to be a mission field. One of the worlds most cultured and sophisticated nations is reaping the barren fruits of over 200 years of secularization.
