History
of the Assemblies of God in Germany
The German Pentecostal movement began
in 1907 when Norwegian missionaries visited Germany en route to
India. Under their ministry a number of German Christians received
the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
In 1908 the new Pentecostals gathered
to organize and establish clear biblical guidelines for their fellowship.
They soon became known for their evangelistic fervor and began sending
missionaries to other countries.
The Pentecostals faced opposition.
They were considered servants of the devil. Only recently have German
Pentecostals been accepted as true Christians. Under the Nazi regime
during World War II, many believers were imprisoned or killed. U.S.
missionaries helped coordinate relief work to help relieve the suffering
of the German people.
After East Germany became a Communist
nation in 1949, missionary work was restricted to West Germany.
U.S. missionaries worked with West German believers in Sunday school
ministry, literature preparation, and evangelism. In 1951 Berean
Bible School was established. A ministry to U.S. servicemen stationed
in West Germany also was implemented.
