History of the Assemblies of God in Greece

Greece was one of the first European countries to be evangelized, but Christianity is now more cultural than spiritual, with only 2% of the population in church on an average Sunday. Evangelicals number around 15,000. The Orthodox Church dominates the cultural and religious life of the country. All other expressions of Christianity are seen as a threat.

Our sister organization in Greece is the Apostolic Church of Pentecost. In the 20Ős and 30Ős they had many Pentecostal pioneers that paved the way for the church today. In 1949 the Assemblies of God USA sent Mary Metaxatos to Greece to do general missionary work. Her ministry varied from preaching in remote villages to purchasing properties in Athens and Porto Rafti for the establishing of a church and summer camp ministry. Numerous A/G missionaries followed in her footsteps doing both church and Bible school work. Presently there are five families working in Greece in various ministry capacities. These ministries include an international church, Bible school, a crisis-pregnancy ministry, intercessory prayer, and a summer camp retreat center.
