History
of the Assemblies of God in Iceland
The majority of Icelanders are only
nominally Christian. Prosperity and secularism are causing a drift
away from the churches, and there is a growing interest in occultism
and New Age ideologies. More that 40% of the population has had
involvement with the occult. The high level of divorce and illegitimate
births is an indication of the need for evangelism. There are forces
at work to de-Christianize Iceland.
Today there are 12 Pentecostal
churches. Six of these churches are mother churches with satellite
outstations being established in new communities. A six-man board
gives leadership to this congregational styled association. There
is a yearly church conference that is held at a campground center
operated by the churches.
There is one missionary family
serving on the island. They are the directors of two 24-hour FM
radio stations that cover 80% of Iceland. They have also been instrumental
in the founding of an ICIU Learning Center in the capital city.
MAPS Construction Teams and International Media Ministries have
given assistance to help the Pentecostal Churches develop their
potential.
