History
of the Assemblies of God in Italy
In the early 20th century
hundreds of Italian immigrants accepted Pentecost while in the United
States. Italian Pentecostals soon began to return to their homeland
to share this blessing with their relatives and friends. By 1929
there were 149 Pentecostal churches in Italy.
Representatives of these churches
attended the first Pentecostal World Conference in Switzerland in
1947 and established an affiliation with the Assemblies of God.
That same year the Pentecostal churches in Italy held their first
national convention and elected a superintendent and other officers.
The government granted them complete recognition in 1959.
In 1949 the first American missionaries
were sent to Italy. Since then American missionaries, many of them
of Italian descent, have worked with the Italian Assemblies of God.
