History
of the Assemblies of God in Japan
The Assemblies
of God in Japan was established due to the work of several faithful
missionary families. In 1913, one such family arrived in Japan and
opened a gospel hall in Tokyo. Shortly afterward, two other halls
were opened in the vicinity. The following year, another couple
arrived and ministered in Yokohama. The children worked with their
parents in conducting open-air meetings every night and by interpreting
the Japanese for new missionaries.
When World War
II broke out several missionaries remained in Japan to minister.
Jessie Wengler became the Assemblies of God representative to General
MacArthurŐs occupation headquarters. Through her efforts a number
of missionaries were permitted to enter Japan. In 1949 the Japan
Assemblies of God was founded as a national organization.
