History
of the Assemblies of God in Malta
The Catholic Church is the State Church
and has regained some of the influence lost during socialist rule.
Its people are perhaps the most devout, practicing Catholics of
all of Europe. Protestant activity among Maltese was illegal before
1964. There is still much opposition to the preaching of the gospel
by non-Catholics, and any activities of this kind are still undermined.
However, there are those in authority who have shown friendship
for the cause of the gospel.
Evangelism efforts began by a Norwegian
Pentecostal evangelist in the early 1970Ős. In 1983 the first Pentecostal
church was founded with the help of the British Assemblies of God.
In 1985 it was recognized as an official Assemblies of God work
in Malta.
In 1992 The Assemblies of God of
Malta was constitutionally established and is composed of three
ordained ministers pastoring three churches. The ministry of ICI
University is having significant impact on many Maltese Evangelical
believers. It has sponsored training ministries for believers of
all ages and several denominations. Tent evangelism has been one
of the most effective outreach tools for the church in Malta.
