History
of the Assemblies of God in Slovakia
The Pentecostal movement began in Slovakia
as early as 1906, but in 1948 when the Communists came to power,
the persecution began. The Pentecostals met together in 1948 to
adopt a common constitution and form a united church. However, the
government rejected this idea. In the 1950Ős many priests, church
workers and at least 2000 believers were imprisoned or liquidated.
Gradually some restrictions were lifted but the church went through
much hardship. Government regulations permitted no fellowship between
congregations, and pastors had to have special government permission
to speak in another church.
In 1989 when the revolution took
place the believers immediately took a very active role in spreading
the gospel outside the churches on the streets. Today, the Pentecostal
Church in Slovakia shares an evangelical faculty at the University
of Banska Bystrica with 4 other denominations. There is also an
active Teen Challenge ministry and a prison outreach.
