History
of the Assemblies of God in Spain
The first known Pentecostal work in
Spain was established in the early 1920Ős. During the 1930Ős Swedish
missionaries pioneered a Pentecostal church in Madrid and soon after
missionaries from England established a work in the city of Ronda.
After the outbreak of civil war
in 1936, missionaries were forced to leave Spain. Meetings outside
of Catholic churches were outlawed, and Protestants had to gather
secretly for worship. Anti-evangelical sentiments continued after
the war. But through home prayer meetings started by local people,
an Assemblies of God church was established. Eventually this group
of believers grew to a congregation of more than 100 members.
As the ministry in Spain expanded,
an intensive training course for pastors was implemented in 1962,
which later became a full-time Bible institute. In 1963 a group
of missionaries and Spanish believers met in Madrid to form the
Assemblies of God of Spain.
