History
of the Assemblies of God in Thailand
During
the years the United States was involved in Vietnam, servicemen
came to Bangkok from battle areas and U.S. bases for rest and relaxation.
The first U.S. Assemblies of God missionaries to Thailand came to
Bangkok in June 1968 to minister to these servicemen. They established
a center to welcome and entertain them.
Also, in 1968
several Assemblies of God missionary couples began to plant churches
in Thailand. That same year, a young Pentecostal Thai, opened his
home to pioneer the first Assembly in the Bangkok area. Thai workers
soon began to plant assemblies in other parts of Thailand.
During these years, thousands of
U.S. servicepeople accepted the Lord and a number were filled with
the Holy Spirit. Although these servicemen were unable to speak
the Thai language, the gospel tracts they distributed made a significant
impact on those who received them.
