History
of the Assemblies of God in the United Kingdom
According to Rev. Paul Weaver, adherence
to Christianity within the UK is declining. Operation World reports
a .4% rate of decrease. Marginal groups such as cults are increasing
at a rate of 8.2%. Social breakdowns, violence in cities, increased
divorce, drug abuse, suicide, and rates of illegitimacy characterize
the problems. Propaganda of New Age and Eastern religions is eroding
the Judeo-Christian heritage of the country. Public opinion is not
necessarily Christian anymore. The complacency and lethargy of Christians
has resulted in decline in church attendance and the tragic loss
of young people.
Against this depressing background there
are some positive signs of hope. Growth is being experienced in
Pentecostal, Charismatic and certain evangelical churches. Prayer
is high on the agenda of most evangelical churches. There is a strong
sense of unity trans-denominationally and radical changes are takingplace
in regard to the great question, "what is church?"
There are isolated cases of revival that
will impact specific cities.
