Lazarus
Chakwera
General
Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Malawi
Lazarus Chakwera was elected as general superintendent of
the Assemblies of God in Malawi on June 3, 1989. Since then,
Malawi has seen tremendous growth and an incredible outpouring
of the Holy Spirit. During the Decade of Harvest, the Malawi
church grew over 500 percent and is continuing to focus on
church planting.
Chakwera learned about God early in life. At the age
of 16, he gave his life to Christ and then heard about the
Pentecostal experience from an Assemblies of God missionary.
At Chancellor College in Zomba, Malawi, while studying English
literature and philosophy, he came in contact with another
Assemblies of God missionary who introduced him to the reality
of the Holy Spirit. He found his desire to preach the gospel
was greatly intensified and he had a new power in witnessing.
As general superintendent of the Assemblies of God in
Malawi, Chakwera has focused on establishing a strong Bible
school. Beginning with only 50 students, there are now over
200 enrolled and 15 extension centers throughout the country.
Chakwera has found that training pastors and church leaders
is the key to church growth in his country.
