John
Jerry Smith
Missionary
to Ecuador
Jerry and Janice Smith are missionaries with the Assemblies
of God, serving in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Smith graduated from
Bethany College in Santa Cruz, Calif. in 1972 and from the
Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in 1985.
Their career in missions began in 1980 in El Salvador,
until 1985 when they went to Guayaquil to start a church and
Christian school. In 1987, 700 students initiated the first
school year. Today, 3700 students from grades K-15 attend
the school called Liceo Cristiano de Guayaquil.
The church has also seen amazing growth as the transforming
and challenging power of the gospel has been preached uncompromisingly
at Guayaquil Christian Center. Presently, over 5000 people
attend eight services on Saturday night and Sunday. Between
30-60 people come forward for salvation during these services.
There are approximately one thousand leaders who minister
weekly in several cell groups and discipleship groups. This
is because discipleship, deliverance, inner healing, and leadership
formation are key issues emphasized during the first year
of new believers. The Smiths, through the church and school,
are committed to influencing the city for Christ as they teach
what it means to "go and make disciples."
