Evangel Unversity
Dr. Robert H. Spence has served as president of Evangel University
since May 1, 1974. Located in Springfield, Mo., Evangel was
founded by the Assemblies of God in 1955 as a national college
of arts and sciences. In 1998, with the addition of graduate
studies, the name was changed to Evangel University.
An ordained minister of the Assemblies of God, Dr. Spence
served as a pastor in Alabama for 20 years prior to assuming
his present position.
During his tenure, President Spence has served on the General
Presbytery of the Assemblies of God, the Commission on Christian
Higher Education, the Assemblies of God Chaplains Commission,
and the Board of Directors of Maranatha Village (a retirement
facility operated by the church).
Dr. Spence is active in civic and community affairs in
Springfield and currently serves on the Board of Directors
of Cox Health Systems and the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Dr.
Spence is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a B.A.
in History and an M.A. in School Administration. Southeastern
College of the Assemblies of God, Lakeland, Florida, conferred
a Doctor of Divinity degree upon President Spence in 1975.
Robert and Anne Spence have three married sons and three
grandsons.
